BBED4223 (2020 – 2021) Pedagogy III Learning and Teaching English in Secondary School (Oracy)

This course focuses on the learning, teaching and assessment of oracy in the English language curriculum in Hong Kong secondary schools. The course explores the development of speaking and listening skills in learning English as a second language and the processes involved in communicative second language listening and speaking, including the development of vocabulary, grammar and discourse competence.

Purpose of this Session

Focus of this session is mainly placed on how post-task feedback is conceptualised through revisiting input from earlier sessions on what makes quality feedback in interactive assessment (IA). An experiential activity-based inductive approach is adopted on the course. Through the use of student generated criteria (SGC), students will be guided in identifying salient features that characterise effective post-task feedback. They will then critically evaluate a teacher’s approach to feedback in an authentic scenario, on the basis of which they will practise giving the target learner feedback in groups, engage in peer evaluation using the SGC, and experience the impact of formative feedback. All this is to prepare them for an upcoming micro-teaching in which they will be practicalising the theories gleaned from Sessions 6 – 10, demonstrating and reflecting on their own strategy use in IA and feedback-giving on real secondary school students in the following session.
